Gamma-ray Bursts - a Puzzle Being Resolved
نویسنده
چکیده
For a few seconds a gamma-ray burst (GRB) becomes the brightest object in the Universe, over-shining the rest of the Universe combined! Clearly this reflects extreme conditions that are fascinating and worth exploring. The recent discovery of GRB afterglow have demonstrated that we are on the right track towards the resolution of this long standing puzzle. These observations have confirmed the relativistic fireball model (more specifically the internal-external shocks model). The prompt optical emission seen in GRB 990123 have demonstrated that GRBs involve ultrarelativistic motion. The breaks in the light curves of GRB 990123 and GRB 990510 and the peculiar light curves of GRB 980519 and GRB 980326 disclosed that these GRBs are beamed. I examine these recent developments and discuss their implications to the models of the source. I argue that the current understanding implies that GRBs signal the birth of stellar mass black holes.

Gamma-Ray Bursts: A Look behind the Headlines1
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs)—intense but brief flashes of gamma rays—were first discovered accidentally by US military satellites in 1967, and have since become a major puzzle for astrophysics. By 1992, however, observations mainly with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on-board NASA’s Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, had provided compelling evidence that GRBs originate mostly at large...
متن کاملQuasi-blackbody component and radiative efficiency of the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts
We perform time-resolved spectroscopy on the prompt emission in gammaray bursts (GRBs) and identify a thermal, photospheric component peaking at a temperature of a few hundreds keV. This peak does not necessarily coincide with the broad band (keV-GeV) power peak. We show that this thermal component exhibits a characteristic temporal behavior. We study a sample of 56 long bursts, all strong enou...

We present an analysis of time-resolved optical emissions observed from the gamma-ray burst GRB 081126 during the prompt phase. The analysis employed time resolved photometry using optical data obtained by the TAROT telescope, using BAT data from the Swift spacecraft and time resolved spectroscopy at high energies from the GBM instrument onboard the Fermi spacecraft. The optical emission of GRB...

متن کاملBlack–body components in Gamma–Ray Bursts spectra?
We study 7 Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), detected both by the BATSE instrument, on– board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, and by the Wide Field Camera (WFC), on board BeppoSAX. These bursts have measured spectroscopic redshifts and are a sizeable fraction of the bursts defining the correlation between the peak energy Epeak (i.e. the peak of the νFν spectrum) and the total prompt isotropic energy ...
